Anthem Performance Guidelines

To ensure a respectful and consistent experience for all audiences, National Anthem performances at the Utah State Fair must follow the guidelines below:


Performance Length

  • Performances should be approximately 60–90 seconds.
  • Extended, embellished, or improvised versions may not be approved.

Tempo & Style

  • The Anthem should be performed at a traditional, dignified tempo.
  • Performances should be respectful and audience-appropriate.
  • Excessive vocal runs, stylistic reinterpretations, or altered melodies are discouraged.

Lyrics & Arrangement

  • The official lyrics of “The Star-Spangled Banner” must be used.
  • Lyrics may not be altered.
  • The melody must remain recognizable and true to the original composition.

Instrumentation

  • Acceptable formats include:
    • Solo vocalist (a cappella or with minimal accompaniment)
    • Instrumental solo (e.g., piano, guitar, violin, trumpet)
    • Small ensemble or choir (limited size)
  • Large bands or amplified ensembles may be subject to additional approval based on venue and event needs.

Amplification & Sound

  • Performers may be a cappella or amplified, depending on venue.
  • Sound support availability varies by event and location.
  • Performers must be flexible and able to adapt to basic sound setups.

Pre-Recorded Tracks

  • Pre-recorded accompaniment tracks are allowed only with prior approval.
  • Tracks must be instrumental only (no guide or backing vocals).
  • Performers must provide the track in advance and ensure it meets technical requirements.

Conduct & Presentation

  • Performers should dress in appropriate, professional attire.
  • Punctuality is required.
  • Performers must follow all Fairpark rules and event protocols.
