4-H & FFA Market Livestock

Entry Information

Entry Deadline: August 12, 2024 @ Noon 12:00 PM MST

Entry Fee: $20/animal - limit ONE animal per exhibitor

1. Enter online by the deadline posted on the website.
2. Late entries will not be accepted.
3. Please enter Showmanship by the deadline if you want to participate in that competition.
4. Exhibitors will receive six (6) single day admission tickets as part of their entry. Exhibitors may purchase additional gate admission tickets at a discount during online registration or at the livestock office during the show.

5. Exhibitors will receive one (1) season parking hangtag as part of their entry. Hangtag does not guarantee parking spot.

**2024 RULE CHANGE**

All Grand Champion and Reserve Champion animals in each species are considered terminal and must be sold. Champion and Reserve animals will be delivered directly to the mutually agreed upon packer of the State Fair Park Authority/buyer choosing and terminated upon return of a clean drug test. It is strictly prohibited to replace or buy back Champion or Reserve animals from the packer.

Judging

1. Judges will place all animals numerically as well as by the Danish system (Blue, Red, or White) according to type, quality and condition.
2. Premiums will be paid only on exhibits deemed worthy by the judge.
3. Judges decisions will be final.


Premiums

1. Exhibitors leaving early without prior approval from the supervisor will forfeit prize money.
2. All rules & regulations must be complied with or premiums may be withheld.


Market Animals

  • All Market animals (including Champion and Reserve) must be cared for by the exhibitor until 6 PM, Saturday the 14th when they are released to the care of the packer for shipping. Each exhibitor has absolute responsibility for the care and condition of the animal they enter and bring to the Fair.
  • Sifted animals (not for health reasons) will be released and able to leave during or immediately after weigh-in unless the exhibitor is competing in showmanship.
  • Animals which are not eligible for the auction, for any reason, are the responsibility of the exhibitor and will be released and able to leave after management approval on the evening of their respective judging day. White Ribbon animals will not be eligible for the 4-H & FFA Livestock Auction.
  • Animal owners who wish to sell private treaty to the packer must notify the livestock office by 6:00 pm on Thursday, Sept 12th.
  • Exhibitors who wish NOT to sell in the auction MUST notify the livestock office by 6:00 PM, Thursday, September 12th. Failure to inform the office of decision could result in forfeiture of premiums or fine.
  • Exhibitors MUST show and sell their own animals without exception.
  • The Grand and Reserve Grand Champion of each species will be drug tested immediately following the show. An exhibitor whose animal tests positive for any illegal substance will be penalized according to the guidelines established by the State Fair Park Authority.

Special Rules

  • Drug Certification Agreement: Exhibitor and parent/guardian certify that the entry has not been administered or that the exhibitor and parent/guardian do not have any knowledge that this entry has received any substance not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and/or the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for food animals. Furthermore, the exhibitor and parent/guardian certify that this entry is free and clear of ALL drug and chemical residue withdrawal and elimination time periods.
  • Drug Testing: During the collection of blood, feather, fecal, hair and urine samples, the Exhibitor or designated responsible adult must be present at all times unless a substitute exhibitor is approved by the superintendent. Exhibitors found in violation of this rule are subject to disqualification.
  • Unapproved Drug Use: The showing of any animal that has been administered during its life any quantity of any unapproved drug, chemical or medication is strictly prohibited. Such drugs include, but are not limited to, any diuretic, unapproved growth stimulant or other unapproved medication. Unapproved means not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and/or the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for slaughter animals including animals that may be destined for human consumption.
  • Approved Drug Use: If an animal has been administered a drug that is FDA approved for its species and class, sufficient time must have passed so that the animal does not test positive for that drug upon arrival at USFP. Animals must remain free and clear of all drug and chemical residues while on show grounds. Please note that elimination time (the time it takes for no drug residue to be found in the system) is generally longer than the labeled withdrawal time for most approved drugs.
  • Emergency Treatment: If an animal requires emergency treatment while on Show grounds, only a licensed veterinarian will be allowed to administer any drug, chemical or feed additive. An exhibitor may choose a licensed veterinarian other than the official Show veterinarian, but the official Show veterinarian MUST be notified in advance and he/she MUST be present. Animals which are administered treatments with a withdrawal or extended elimination time period will be disqualified from competition. Furthermore, The Official Show Veterinarian, in agreement with Show Management, reserve the right to treat any animal if, in the opinion of the Official Show Veterinarian, it is in the best interest of the animal's health and well-being to be treated. If the Official Show Veterinarian administers treatment to an animal, and therefore uses any medication that does not meet the appropriate withdrawal and or elimination time, will be determined ineligible for competition.
  • Wholesome Meat Act: The USDA Wholesome Meat Act applies to all market livestock. Only animals eligible for immediate slaughter may be brought onto the grounds and exhibited:

a. Animals must be in good health and carcasses free of drug or chemical residues.

b. Drug labels must be observed. Please note that elimination time (the time it takes for no drug residue to be found in the system) is generally longer than the labeled withdrawal time for most approved drugs.

c. If drug or chemical residues are found in tissue of carcasses, the entire carcass may be condemned.

The Utah State Fair/ State Fair Park Authority will in no way be liable or responsible for the condition of carcasses or the sale price of the animal. In such cases, the exhibitor forfeits all rights to all proceeds including Auction Price, Scholarships, Premium Awards, Market (Floor) Price and Special Awards.

Miscellaneous

  • A vet check will be performed upon arrival for initial screening of market animals.
  • Animals will be filtered through weigh-in process from the trailer or pens.
  • All weights recorded at the scale are final. All of one species must cross the same scale. Weights recorded at this time are for class placement and not a certification of weight.
  • Check in with the barn superintendent/committee before tying or penning any animal.
  • Any project animals not cared for properly, fed, and watered and stall area kept clean, will forfeit all prize money and be subject to other penalties which could include being ineligible to enter exhibits in the future.
  • Should the General and Specific rules conflict, the latter will govern. Exhibitors are required to read the Livestock General Rules.
  • 4-H & FFA exhibitors will show together.
  • Exhibitors must have an animal entered in their respective department to be eligible to participate in showmanship and must show their entered animal.
  • No drenching of any animal or muzzles of any kind will be allowed on the Fairpark without the recommendation of the designated show veterinarian and informing show management.
  • The official tag listed on the entry form must be the only tag in the animal's ear at the time of weigh-in (except for scrapie tags in ewe lambs and breeding sheep or goats).

  • Ear Tags/Validation: USJLA ear tags must be recorded on entry and in animals' ear by official tagging date. All tag numbers will be verified through 4-H/FFA officials. Exhibitors in violation of this rule will be asked to leave the premises.
  • Ownership: Exhibitor must own animal 100 days prior to September 10, 2024
  • Weight: Minimum weight 1000 lbs
  • Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act: As required, in 21 CFR 589.2000, entry in the Junior Market Steer show shall serve as verification by the exhibitor that, to the best of their knowledge, while under their ownership, possession or direct control, the entry was not fed any feed containing ruminant-derived meat or bone meal. Entrants agree to allow packer inspections of feed ingredient records and facilities.
  • Drenching: No drenching of any kind will be allowed on the Fairpark without the recommendation of the show veterinarian and informing show management.
  • Muzzles: The use of muzzles and other anti-grazing devices are strictly prohibited without the recommendation of the show veterinarian and informing show management.
  • Health Certificate: not required for Market Steers, animals required to complete vet check upon arrival.
  • Drug Testing: During the collection of blood samples, the exhibitor and designated responsible adult must be present. Only the exhibitor, designated adult, assigned veterinarian and assistant, species committee chairman, and designated USF staff/board member are permitted in the blood draw area.

  • Weight: Minimum weight 240 lbs
  • Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act: As required, in 21 CFR 589.2000, entry in the Junior Market Hog show shall serve as verification by the exhibitor that, to the best of their knowledge, while under their ownership, possession or direct control, the entry was not fed any feed containing ruminant-derived meat or bone meal. Entrants agree to allow packer inspections of feed ingredient records and facilities.
  • Drenching: No drenching of any kind will be allowed on the Fairpark without the recommendation of the show veterinarian and informing show management.
  • Muzzles: The use of muzzles and other anti-grazing devices are strictly prohibited without the recommendation of the show veterinarian and informing show management.
  • Health Certificate: not required for Market Hogs, animals required to complete vet check upon arrival.
  • Drug Testing: During the collection of blood samples, the exhibitor and designated responsible adult must be present. Only the exhibitor, designated adult, assigned veterinarian and assistant, species committee chairman, and designated USF staff/board member are permitted in the blood draw area.
  • Hair length: Hogs must be clipped prior to arriving on the premises. No trimming allowed once on USF property.

  • Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act: As required, in 21 CFR 589.2000, entry in the Junior Market Goat show shall serve as verification by the exhibitor that, to the best of their knowledge, while under their ownership, possession or direct control, the entry was not fed any feed containing ruminant-derived meat or bone meal. Entrants agree to allow packer inspections of feed ingredient records and facilities.
  • Drenching: No drenching of any kind will be allowed on the Fairpark without consent of show management.
  • Muzzles: The use of muzzles and other anti-grazing devices are strictly prohibited without the recommendation of the designated show veterinarian and informing show management.
  • Health Certificate: not required for Market Goats, animals required to complete vet check upon arrival.
  • Drug Testing: During the collection of blood samples, the exhibitor and designated responsible adult must be present. Only the exhibitor, designated adult, assigned veterinarian and assistant, species committee chairman, and designated USF staff/board member are permitted in the blood draw area.
  • Hair length: Goats must be slick shorn with 3/8” of hair or less (above knees and hocks) at time of arrival. Animals must be uncovered prior to vet check.
  • Collars: Exhibitors will be allowed to use halters or collars in the showring. No training collars allowed.
  • Teeth: There may be no evidence of breaking of skin or eruption of two permanent front teeth. Milk teeth must be in place.

4-H & FFA Market Lambs

  • Weight: Minimum weight 110 lbs
  • Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act: As required, in 21 CFR 589.2000, entry in the Junior Market Lamb show shall serve as verification by the exhibitor that, to the best of their knowledge, while under their ownership, possession or direct control, the entry was not fed any feed containing ruminant-derived meat or bone meal. Entrants agree to allow packer inspections of feed ingredient records and facilities.
  • Drenching: No drenching of any kind will be allowed on the Fairpark without the recommendation of the show veterinarian and informing show management.
