FIBER ARTS DIVISIONS

Exhibitors may not enter in more than one division in the same section/class.

BP - Professional- Any exhibitor who has attained a high level of proficiency in their field of interest, but also receives monetary compensation. (ex: sells online, in person in a store or teaches)

BA- Adult-Any exhibitor ages 18+ that is not professional or special artist

BS - Senior- Age 65 and Over

BY - Youth– Age 12-17

BJ - Junior - Age 5-11

BSA - Special Artist- The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines an individual with a disability as a person who: (1) Has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of that person; (2) Has a record of such an impairment; or (3) Is regarded as having such impairment. The impairment must be relevant to the art style.

BEST OF SHOW AWARDS

Winners will not forfeit placing premium with Best of Show or Grand Award. *There must be at least 3 placings in a section in order to award a Best of Show for the following:

One Best of Show awarded in each Category for the following divisions as Judges deem worthy:

  • BP Professional - $20 & a Rosette
  • BA Adult - $20 & a Rosette
  • BS Senior Citizen - $20 & a Rosette

Judges may select up to 16 Best of Show awards in the Youth, Junior, and Special Artist Divisions (all classes competing). *There must be at least 3 placings in a section in order to award a Best of Show for the following:

  • BY Youth - $20 & a Rosette
  • BJ Junior - $20 & a Rosette
  • BSA Special Artist - $20 & a Rosette


SPECIAL AWARDS

  1. Grand Prize Award - $100, Rosette, and an Award will be given to the best exhibit in the entire Fiber Arts show. Selection to be made by the judges and the department supervisor.
  2. People’s Choice - $20 and a Rosette - Voting will take place September 4th through the 7th and the award will be placed on September 8th.

Fiber Arts Entry Information

  1. Entries will not be received in the Fair Office prior to the entry dates unless prior arrangements have been made with the Manager of Competitive Arts Department. . Entries must be taken to the Pioneer Building. (exception is mailed entries)
  2. Exhibits will not be released prior to release dates.
  3. To help maintain fairness and clarity in the judging and display process exhibitors may enter only one (1) item per Class number, but you may enter multiple classes. Similar or like items may not be entered in different classes. Items should be entered in the class where they most fit.
  4. *Professional, Adult, Senior and Special Artists Divisions may enter all classes except those designated for Youth, Junior and Childrens Divisions. *
  5. The Miscellaneous class in divisions can only be used for an entry which does not, cannot, or will not fit in any other class in that division or in any other division.
  6. Every exhibit must remain intact until the specified release dates. Exhibitors are not permitted to remove their entries themselves; assistants will be available for this task. The Fair is not responsible for articles left after release dates.
  7. Only articles listed in the Department Classes will be accepted for entry.
  8. All articles must have been completed within the past two years. AN ARTICLE WHICH HAS BEEN ENTERED IN A PREVIOUS UTAH STATE FAIR WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
  9. Exhibitors must be legal residents, military or student residents of the State of Utah.
  10. All entries must be the work of the exhibitor and shown in his or her name. Original designs should be so labeled.
  11. Entries should be labeled with exhibitors Name, email and phone number. Attach it to your entry on the back bottom right corner.
  12. The Supervisor and/or Fair Management reserves the right to refuse entries if they contain objectionable content, are unsuitable for judging or require more space than can be accommodated. No unfinished work will be accepted for entry. All articles must be clean, pressed, and if necessary, blocked.
  13. If sending articles by mail or express, address them to The Utah State Fair, Comp Arts Department 155 N. 1000 W., Salt Lake City, UT 84116. Sender's name and address should be plainly written upon the inside. All packages must be prepaid. Directions for return shipment must be provided. Articles entered will be returned at the expense of the exhibitor. All packages must arrive by August 22nd, 2025. All packages must include labeling of items and a copy of online entry form or receipt.
  14. Entries that are soiled, covered with pet hair, or emitting unpleasant odor will not be displayed or judged.
  15. Items smaller than 9" must be mounted on fabric covered cardboard or foam board that is 2-3" larger than the item. This will help in displaying your item.
  16. Items that are framed are allowed, glass is optional. Mounting on a board is preferred due to weight concerns. The Utah State Fair will not be held responsible for any damage or breakage to frames or framed work.

Fiber Arts Judging

  1. The judges are instructed not to award premiums unless the articles are deemed worthy of merit. If any article is not worthy of the first premium, the judges may award second and third or no premium, according to their judgment.
  2. Fiber Arts staff and judges may enter articles for display only.
  3. Articles entered into Fiber Arts, Fine Arts and Creative Arts that are identical and entered by the same person will be disqualified, and entry fees will not be refunded.
  4. Premiums will be paid as indicated, unless specified otherwise.
  5. If an item is entered into the wrong class the Judges may put it in the correct class for judging.
  6. Judges' decisions are final.
  7. All judging will be closed to the public.
  8. All divisions except Professional will be judged using the Danish Method in each class.
  9. The Professional division will be judged on the American System in each class. The following percentages will serve as a general guide to exhibitors of Fiber Arts, other than quilting, in preparing their exhibits. Please look at Quilting section for judging guidelines.
