Farm Bureau News - July 2011

"The smell of funnel cakes and corn-on-the-cob combined with the sound of playful screams from the Ferris Wheel and the bellows of farm animals in the warm, late summer evening make for the perfect memories of childhood"

This article from the Summer 2011 copy of the Utah Farm Bureau News: Countryside Edition highlights the impact the Utah State Fair has had on many people. From Utah Senate President Michael Waddoups to the now Utah State Fair Executive Director Clark H. Caras, the Utah State Fair has been part of growing up.

Bringing together Utahns from every corner of the state to a location where the spirit of Americana lives on. The Utah State Fair embodies the positive feelings of a fruitful harvest on the farm, coupled with the youthful, care-free days of summer.

For over 22 years the Utah State Fairpark has played host to the Salt Lake City Police Department Motorcycle Squad's training. Every officer is recertified twice annually by passing an obstacle course under a time limit and without hitting any cones.

This training was a little different, the Squad was practicing with new BMW R1200P police motorcycles.

UTAH FAIRPARK OPERATIONS DIRECTOR RECEIVES NATIONAL CERTIFICATION

SALT LAKE CITY, UT The International Association of Fairs and Expos headquartered in Springfield, MO., has designated Utah State Fairpark Operations Director, Andrew Carlino, as a Certified Fair Executive.
The certification is based upon a rigid scorecard of best practices, management skills, education and leadership in the industry. The award was presented to Carlino in Louisville, Kentucky on April 17, 2011 during the IAFE spring Management Conference. Only 15 executives qualified for this award in 2011 from among the 3,200 organized fairs in the United States and Canada.
"Andy has been a wonderful addition to our staff and has had a tremendously positive impact on our organization and property," said Utah State Fairpark Board Chairman, Roger Beattie, while recognizing Carlino during the Fairpark's monthly board meeting Tues., April 19, 2011.
A resident of West Jordan, Carlino has been with the Utah State Fairpark since 2004. He is active in Fairpark community affairs and is a board member of the Utah Association of Fair and Events. He and his wife, Tiffany, are the parents of two young sons.
"Over the course of 11 days annually Andy hosts almost 300,000 people on the Utah State Fairpark and makes sure of their safety, comfort, enjoyment, and public health," said Clark Caras, Utah State Fairpark Executive Director. "Thanks to Andy and his staff, Utah is able to boast of being home to one of the most classic and historic fairparks in America."

This year's Utah State Fair runs Sept. 8-18, 2011. For more information about the State Fair or Fairpark events, visit www.utahstatefair.com.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT The Utah State Fairpark Board of Directors is pleased to announce their selection of a new Executive Director. Clark H. Caras, of West Jordan, UT, will assume his new duties at the Fairpark on April 18. For the past six years, Caras has served as marketing director for the Utah Governor's Office of Economic Development during a time that has seen companies such as Proctor & Gamble, Adobe, Disney, Hershey, Amer Sports, and others expand in, or relocate to the state. His career encompasses broad experience in public affairs, politics, business development, corporate initiatives, and large event planning.
Caras grew up on a sheep ranch in central Utah. He said that being a kid who was allergic to most farm animals made him resourceful at an early age. "It's that out-of-the-box thinking that will help me support and expand on the legacy of the State Fair and to further the long-term vision for the Fairpark." Caras said.
The Utah State Fair marks 156 years in 2011.
"Utah enjoys one of the best state fairs in the nation," Caras said.
"The same energy that emanates from this place during the 11 days of the Fair will spill over into an exciting year-round venue with events such as the return of the Dickens' Christmas Festival." he said.
"What the city and the state have here is a 65-acre jewel on the verge of becoming a prime destination for family activities, community festivals, special events, and economic development opportunities."
